The tiny Republic of Montenegro is a country full of beautiful landscapes, simple villages and an unpretentious outlook. Saga has brought two more Montenegro hotels into its new Europe and the Mediterranean 2007 programme, offering the perfect based from which to explore this often overlooked Balkan destination.

Both properties - the brand-new five-star Hotel Splendid and the all-inclusive four-star Hotel Iberostar Bellevue - are set in Becici, a resort full of rustic charm and sandy shores, which is a two-kilometre promenade stroll from the medieval town of Budva and a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Dubrovnik airport, the Croatian gateway to Montenegro.

Once the domestic destination of choice for Yugoslavians, Montenegro - which gained its full independence in May 2005 - is enjoying something of a tourism renaissance thanks to tour operators like Saga.

That's hardly surprising, given that it combines 117 golden-sand beaches stretching along its 300km coastline with historic towns and villages and a lush, mountainous hinterland rich in flora and fauna.

And it is great value for money! Seven nights half-board at the five star beachfront Hotel Splendid cost from as little as 599, while a 14-night break leads in at 974, and extra weeks are available from 379. Those prices are per person.

The Splendid only opened in July last year and has already established itself as the best hotel on the Balkan peninsula. The property has 322 rooms - Saga's rooms all have sea views - all with balconies, and all with minibar and satellite TV as standard.

Hotel facilities include two restaurants, two bars, a lounge and rooftop terrace; an additional beach bar and restaurant (open during the summer months only); indoor and outdoor pools, with pool bar; and a comprehensive spa wellness centre.

Prices at the four-star Iberostar Bellevue, situated on the seafront start at a mere 454 for a seven-night all-inclusive stay, this price also includes insurance, cancellation tax and two excursions and flights. Longer breaks start at 694 for 14 nights and 884 for 21 nights - less than 42 a day, including all meals and drinks - with extra weeks leading in at 219 per person.

The 578 guest-rooms all have balconies, and the hotel's own restaurant and bar are complemented by the Saga Bar, serving free drinks from 1100hrs to 2300hrs daily. Hotel amenities include three outdoor pools and tennis courts.

Montenegro highlights include Budva, considered to be one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast, picturesque Sveti Stefan with its narrow streets and ancient churches and lake Skadar, as well as having breathtaking scenery, it is the largest bird-sanctuary in Europe and is home to breeding Pelicans.
