Saga launches independent care service in Canterbury

Monday 15 October 2007

Over 50s experts Saga have today announced that following the successful launch of Saga Independent Living in the Folkestone area, the service is now being extended to Canterbury for residents who may have care needs in this area.

The service is aimed at providing valuable support and care for people who want to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. It provides care and support ranging from help with the weekly shop, cleaning, reading to clients, assisting with the preparation of meals to bathing and personal care.

Research has shown that over half (56%) of the population would prefer to stay in their home and receive care from trained workers to prolong their independence; a further three in four (73%) think they should be able to choose who provides such care if and when they need it.[Note:1]

A focus group carried out for Saga* also revealed a real need for a quality service run by independent experts, as experience with some existing providers did not always meet their individual needs. Many clients complained of a lack of continuity among the carers, and also that the focus of the agency was on social service contracts, not always wholly focused on the client.

Choosing to keep your independence and stay at home is very important for people but it's absolutely crucial that the very best care is available. A significant number of existing domiciliary companies currently fail to achieve national minimum standards. Saga has vast experience of putting the customer first, an approach that will be replicated with this service.

The launch of Saga Independent Living in Canterbury will offer high standards and carefully selected and vetted staff. This is not a brokerage, but a service that will be wholly run and managed by Saga.

Saga are also seeking applications from people to become fully qualified carers. The job offers flexibility to work around children or for those studying for a nursing qualification and full training is given. Call 01303 771717 for an application form.
