Pets enjoy a credit crunch-less Christmas
- Over half of owners buy their pet a present
- Over a quarter of pets get a Christmas stocking
- Wise over 50s less likely to feed their pets fattening treats
Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, including those of the four-legged variety, research* by Saga Pet Insurance has revealed. Over half (53%) of cat and dog owners splash out on presents for their furry friends, with women being the most generous (56% women give presents vs 48% men). Over a quarter (28%) of owners will also treat their pets to a Christmas stocking.
Pets are certainly not going to go hungry this year with a fifth (18%) of all owners planning to serve their pets a traditional Christmas lunch of turkey and all the trimmings. One in seven (14%) over 50s would also rather spend extra time in the kitchen cooking their furry friend a special Christmas lunch tailored to their diet. The over 50s are also found to be the most health conscious owners with just 30% planning to give their pets extra food such as chocolate, compared to 37% of under 50s.
For many people, pets are seen as members of the family and a very close companion. This is particularly true among the over 50s generation, with over 1 million of them owning a cat and a dog. As such, a quarter (24%) of the over 50s will sign cards from their pets as well as themselves.
Appearance is also a priority with 7% of Britons giving their pets a special groom ahead of the 25th December and a seasonal style conscious 6% of owners even dress their pets up in a special festive outfit.
