"We warmly welcome the initiatives on social care for the elderly and the energy bill announced today in the Queens Speech. Free care for the very frail that live at home should be a defining characteristic of society today. And action to put the poorest and most vulnerable people on social tariffs for their heating bills is both direly needed and long overdue.
Whether these measures make it to the statute book before the General Election is doubtful but we are delighted to see social care and pensioner poverty placed right at the top of the electoral agenda. It appears that the Government have woken up to the fact that it will probably be the grey vote that swings the election – at last strength in numbers is beginning to count for something."
