Saga Zone swells on 'Silver Sufers Day'
- The march of the over 50s online continues, Saga Zone shows today (15 May), as the nation celebrates Silver Surfers Day.
New figures for the over 50s social networking website show a four-fold increase in the number of over 50s using social networking websites from 2007 -2009.
The over 50s are also continuing to embrace the internet generally with over half (53%) saying they accessed the internet on a daily basis in 2008 compared to just over a third in 2002.
Today’s figures come as Saga Zone announces that its membership has grown to 55,000 members since its launch in November 2007.
Since launching, Saga Zone has transformed its website by introducing a number of new features whilst also undergoing a complete new look in the past six months. Members are now able to write blogs, upload photographs and videos, and chat instantly through the forum. This coincides with other Saga Zone trends showing that there has been a significant rise in people writing and reading blogs in the past five years.
Emma Soames, Editor-at-large of Saga Magazine, said:
“The over 50s are embracing online social communication with vigour and today’s figures put to bed the stereotype that older people are computer illiterate. They demonstrate not only the growing accomplishment of Silver Surfers in using technology, but also the willingness of older people to embrace new forms of communication.”
