Emma Soames, Trustee of the Saga Respite for Carers Trust and Editor at Large of the Saga Magazine commented on the plans to scrap GP catchment areas
“Giving people freedom to choose how and when they receive medical treatment and by whom is to be applauded and I am sure a step forward welcomed by everybody. However serious thought needs to be given to this issue. Having the ability to choose a surgery that is convenient for work or school is great for working parents, but what about our retired population. Many rural surgeries could find themselves suffering financially from the migration of patients and in the most serious cases face closure. Without the means to travel long distances to visit their GP older people or people providing care services to their loved ones could again lose out on these essential local services.
If these proposals result in increasing standards then this has to be a positive step forward, but one that should be taken with thorough thought and extreme caution to avoid any unintended consequences."
