Saga charity week goes from strength to strength
- Saga Charity week starts Monday 10th until Friday 14th
This May, around 9,000 Saga customers and staff will be walking a mile for the Saga Charitable Trust. The charity walk will start at Saga’s headquarters in Hythe – with the company’s executive chairman Andrew Goodsell leading the way. In addition, the walk is also taking place in 43 countries and at sea with passengers taking a walk around the Saga Pearl II and Saga Ruby – some eight times round the deck.
The walk is the highlight of a fundraising week that in 2009 raised over £32,000 and enabled the Trust to make a real difference to people in the developing world.
Recent projects funded have included: water treatment plants for communities in the Peruvian Amazon; school libraries in Kenya and Thailand; nursing care and support for families affected by HIV/Aids in South Africa; a sustainable farming programme in a drought ridden area of Kenya; and an income generating scheme for a women’s co-operative in Nepal.
As well as the charity walk, staff at all Saga sites will be participating in themed quiz nights, raffles, a photography competition, and an “Auction of promises” where staff can pledge a gift such as cake baking, portrait painting and car washing.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman, Saga Group commented: “I am constantly overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers and staff in supporting the Saga Charitable Trust. The projects are in areas visited by our passengers and there is a huge interest among them in becoming involved. ”
*The walk is taking place at all Saga’s offices in Kent
