Perhaps a National Care helpline to help carers through the maze of provision

Friday 26 November 2010

"The Carers Strategy, announced by Paul Burstow today is an incredibly important issue, not just to the nations estimated 6million unpaid family carers who provide support to those with immediate care needs but critically for the generations of Carers to come who will make their decisions to care, or not, very much on what the government does to support carers now;" said Ros Altmann, Director General of Saga.

"This is a really positive document and serves as a great start, we particularly welcome the improved access to information and advice proposed within the strategy document. Saga’s research, however, shows there is widespread confusion over the practical and financial support available to Carers. 83% expect support but only 12% knew how to access it.”

“The government needs to find a way for people to cut through the maze that is ‘Social Care’. We believe a national approach is vital. In addition to the independent local care advisers this should include establishing a well publicised national Carers helpline. We also need to extend the reach of the information by working with charitable and private sector partners to reach audiences currently untouched by government websites.”
