4th September - the day most over 50s set off on holiday
As millions of children prepare for the start of the new school year, the over 50s are jetting off on holiday this Saturday, 4th September, according to new research from Saga Travel Insurance.
The Saga survey reveals that, for the past four years, the first Saturday in September is the day when most of their policyholders start their holiday. July travel dates - favoured by families - are conspicuous by their absence from the top ten travel days due to the fact that the Saga generation avoid the crowds and higher costs of travelling during school holidays.
When it comes to holiday companions, Saga’s survey of over 14,000 over 50s revealed that some holidaymakers would prefer to take their pet away, than their parents or in-laws. The vast majority of people (79%) would prefer to holiday with their spouse or partner, followed by their children (43%) and grandchildren (28%). Nearly one in ten of the 50-54 year olds would take their dog or cat, while only seven per cent would take their parents and less than one per cent would take their in-laws.
While on holiday, the majority of adults like to devote time to sightseeing (76%), eating out (58%) and walking (43%). One in ten (9%) look forward to rekindling the romance, with men twice as keen as women to put the spice back in to their sex lives (12% vs 5%).
Holidaymakers are increasingly eager to meet new people the older they get. Only 17 per cent of 50-54 year olds look to make new friends, compared to nearly half (45%) of those aged 75 and over. Playing sport while on holiday is an activity that does not appear to wane with age with one in ten 50-54 year olds looking forward to keeping active whilst away and eight per cent of 75 and overs.
Andrew Goodsell, Executive Chairman, Saga Group commented: “It’s good to see that, as we get older, we continue to enjoy our holidays to the full. Moreover, with grandparents taking more of an active role in looking after their grandchildren during the school holidays, it seems that September is the month in which the over 50s relax, unwind and recharge their batteries”.
