DR ROS ALTMANN COMMENTS ON UNION PROPOSALS TO MOVE CARE INTO THE PUBLIC SECTOR
"The issue is not and should not be whether care should be a private sector or public sector responsibility - the issue is that Government funding of care is wholly inadequate, and, consequently, where the money is going to come from, and how that money is going to be generated and directed.
“Local authorities are cutting back on the amount they pay for supporting people in care homes to the extent that they do not pay enough to cover the actual costs of care.
“No business or organisation can run at this kind of loss. Private payers are now being forced to subsidise the losses being sustained on publicly-funded residents but this is simply not sustainable.
“Until Government wakes up to this reality, we will continue to face a crisis in care homes. The important element is to fund care properly – regardless of whether it is private or public sector operated - so that decent care can be delivered.”
