OVER 50S VOTE LADY THATCHER AS BEST POST WAR PRIME MINISTERMonday 8 April 2013
Commenting on the death of Baroness Thatcher, Paul Green, director of communications at Saga said:
"It was Baroness Thatcher’s clarity of vision and purpose that led many of today’s over 50s to identify Mrs Thatcher as the politician they believed would be the best to lead us out of our current economic troubles; and, despite her combative image, one in five of the 10,203 people we asked, believed she was the post-war Prime Minister who most cared about the UK and its people.
Whatever one’s politics she will go down in history as a woman who changed Britain, made a stand for freedom internationally, blazed a trail for women in the male dominated world of politics, boosted home ownership and found a resonance with those of an aspirational mind-set.
Baroness Thatcher was a conviction politician. She told people what she thought was right for them and the country, and not necessarily what she thought they most wanted to hear."
Note to editors: The Saga Populus Panel, the largest opinion polls of the UK's over 50s, asked 10,203 people between 29th and 31st August 2012 their views of post-war Prime Ministers. A third of respondents named Margaret Thatcher as their favourite Prime Minister and 39% believed she would have been the best at leading the UK out of its current economic troubles.
