Saga welcomes Autumn Statement
"Today's abolition of NICs for under 21s in the Autumn statement is great news" said Paul Green Director of Communication for Saga, "We have been campaigning for a cut in taxes on employing young people and the long term unemployed for many years and we are delighted the Government have listened and acted.
"We also called for the jobs tax to be abolished when employers recruit the long term unemployed and we hope to see action in this respect in future Budgets. Long term unemployment is a real burden on the over 50s who find getting back into work a bigger problem than any other age group. And with the state pension age moving to 70 for future retirees this move will become ever more important. Saga's research has shown that 31% of men and 29% of women have come to terms with the fact that they will be working past 65 - and surprisingly many had chosen to because they enjoyed it as opposed to feeling they needed to for financial reasons.
Instead of winding down, today's over 50s are instead thinking about how they can re-train or find work that is more rewarding to kick start a new career."
