Everyone's talking about Pompeii the movie! Why not discover the real Pompeii with Saga?

Monday 9 June 2014

In the new movie Pompeii, as Mount Vesuvius erupts, a slave-turned-gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love.

As Saga passengers walk through the streets of Pompeii, an archaeologist will reveal stories of the natural disaster and how the city and its people lay undisturbed beneath the ashes for more than 1,500 years.

The archaeologist will offer an unparalleled insight into Roman life through visits to the city’s forum, temples, thermal baths and theatres.

There will also be an excursion to Herculaneum, another perfectly preserved site, and a tour of the residential Villa Poppalea, in Oplontis.

Excavations began in Herculaneum during the 19th century and Saga guests will be able to view many of the objects discovered at the site on a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

Italy's lesser-known, yet equally impressive archaeological sites, including Paestum and Phlegraean Fields will be included in this special interest holiday.  Paestum’s museum is on an ancient site founded by the Greeks in 6BC and is known for its Doric temples. The museum contains the Tomb of the Diver, with its beautiful frescoes, which was only discovered in 1968.
The tour to Phlegraean Fields, which is an area dominated by volcanic activity - steam vents and craters of steaming mud - includes the Cave of Sybil, the Roman cistern and nearby Pozzuoli with its amphitheatre.

Stay at the Grand Hotel Moon Valley (3Q+), in Vico Equense, for seven nights on an all-inclusive basis with a free bar open 12 hours a day. Set in pretty gardens in hills overlooking the Bay of Naples, the hotel offers a comfortable base to explore archaeological sites and museums or even head to Sorrento or the paradise island of Capri.

Passengers will be accompanied throughout the holiday by a Saga representative and an expert archaeology host who will give also three talks during the holiday.

Seven nights from £908, departing London Gatwick on November 5, 2014, March 25 and April 15 and 22, 2015. There is a limited number of single rooms at no extra cost.

Price includes return flights, airport taxes, all-inclusive accommodation, free bar open 12 hours a day, five excursions with nine visits, three talks, archaeology host and Saga representative, porterage, travel insurance and cancellation cover.
