It’s one of those typical holiday conundrums – one person likes to laze on a sunbed while another wants to go exploring! Saga’s new Aegean Panoramas: Tale of Two Islands escorted journey to Rhodes and Samos solves the problem by offering the best of both worlds.
Saga’s enchanting two-island escape starts in Rhodes, named after the sea-nymph and daughter of Poseidon. It is a Greek island blessed with a verdant natural landscape and a sun-kissed climate.
Laze by the pool or take a dip in the sea while staying at the beach-front 4-star Sun Beach Resort (4Q) in Ialyssos. The full-board accommodation includes a free bar serving local wines, beers and soft drinks from 11am to 11pm.
Those who can drag themselves from their sunbeds can discover a labyrinth of narrow streets and avenues in the UNESCO-protected old city and visit the magnificent Palace of the Knights. There will also be an optional excursion to the pretty town of Lindos, with its traditional whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets.
On day 4, take a ferry from Rhodes to Samos, passing wild coastlines set against the deep blue Aegean sea. Spend seven nights at the 4-star Arion Hotel, in Kokkari, which has a free bar serving local wines, beers, soft drinks and ouzo from 9am to midnight.
Choose to bask in the sun or discover romantic coves before taking a tour of the ancient and modern highlights of Samos; travelling past cypress groves, vineyards and pine forests to see the Ancient Temple of Hera.
The small but distinguished island was the birthplace of philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. There will be an opportunity to view the ancient sites around Pythagorio or take an optional day trip across the sea to Ephesus, in Turkey, an exquisitely preserved classical metropolis.
On day 11, return to Rhodes for the last four nights to relax again or continue exploring this beautiful island.
