Commenting on reports of a "dementia tax" faced by sufferers who are left to arrange much of their own care, Saga's director of communications, Paul Green said: "These reports rightly point out the disparity between the treatment of different conditions.

"However, they also mask the much-bigger impact that changes to qualification criteria in paid-for care are having on families.
"Many people are now increasingly reliant on unpaid care, because changes to the system mean local authorities no longer provide it to those considered to have only a ‘moderate’ need of help."
