Dreamboat theatre star Lee Mead headlines on two Saga Pearl II cruises
Lee, who shot to fame after winning the title role in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, singing Any Dream Will Do, is no stranger to working at sea as his first professional engagement was a six-month stint on a cruise ferry.
Lee, 33, said: “We sailed between England and Lisbon for five days a week. Once, when we were going through a storm across the Bay of Biscay, the ship rocked from side to side and I was sliding across the stage while singing Frankie Valli’s Can't Take My Eyes Off You. It was very funny!”
The singer will be on the “Treasures of the Caribbean” cruise from the 14th to 17th February 2015 and the “Gulf of Bothnia” cruise from the 5th to the 8th July 2015.
Lee loves playing to new audiences and says he can’t wait to sing on Saga Pearl II. He said: “I have been touring the UK for five years now but to bring my new show onto the ship is very exciting. I love to travel, it's one of my favourite things - seeing other parts of the world and different cultures.
“When I was a student I lived in New York for two months which was an amazing experience. It was a dream as a kid to study acting over there and I had a brilliant time. I would walk from my flat in the heart of Little Italy to the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Union Square and spend the occasional afternoon in Central Park reading scripts. It was wonderful.
“Over the past couple of years I have been to Japan and Malaysia during my tours but I would love to see more of Europe. Italy is on my holiday bucket list, definitely Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. I can remember seeing films like Roman Holiday as a kid and thinking how amazing it looked; the food and the passion of the people.
“I like to go to places where I can learn something new, see amazing architecture, learn about the history and try great food.”
Lee will be in for a treat on the 400-passenger Pearl II which has a reputation for fine dining. He said: “Yes, I love eating out! It's one of my favourite things, especially with a good bottle of red wine. I am a big fan of Thai food and I also love a good steak but there can't be any chewy fat in sight!
“I hear there is an afternoon tea on Saga Pearl II every day. I once took my daughter Betsy to a Charlie And The Chocolate Factory themed afternoon tea in a London hotel. We loved it.”
Lee, who separated from his wife Denise van Outen in 2013, said: “More than anything I love spending my time with my Betsy. She is so beautiful. At weekends I am in London so we go to the cinema together and see films like Paddington and The Box Trolls. She also loves London Zoo and the London aquarium. “
During the week, Lee is based in Cardiff filming BBC1's medical drama Casualty. He plays Lofty and was recently shortlisted for a National Television Award for Best Newcomer. He said: “I have just signed for a second year and I'm really happy because Lofty will have will have some bigger storylines to play.”
