Discover beautiful Portuguese Pousadas and pastéis de nata – the ultimate egg custard tart!
Portugal’s Historic Pousadas is a Saga tour that also offers the chance to explore charming cities and stay in four beautiful yet different luxury pousadas – historic buildings that are rich in culture.
The tour starts in Oporto, where the affection between Portugal and the UK is still strong as the big port houses founded by British families, Taylor’s and Graham’s, continue to thrive in the Douro Valley.
Travel to Guimarães for a half-board stay at Pousada de Guimarães, a stunning former 12th century convent that has been converted into deluxe accommodation while retaining its charming character.
Call at Quinta da Avelada for a wine-tasting session and pause for lunch in Amarante before arriving at the lovingly restored 19th century Pousada de Viseu for a two-night stay.
Take a walking tour of Viseu and visit Caramulo where the Museu do Caramulo showcases both art and automobiles!
Visit Luso, famous for its mineral water, and Bussaco where the Duke of Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese army defeated French forces at the Battle of Buçaco in 1810.
Enjoy a two-night half-board stay at the Pousada Conde de Ourém, set on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the Seiça River Valley.
Take a full-day optional tour to Coimbra, a nearby university city and perhaps tuck in to those egg custard tart treats Pastéis de Nata - washed down with a bica, the smooth Portuguese espresso, for the ultimate pick-me-up!
There will also be time to view the magnificent UNESCO-protected monastery at Batalha and Alcobaca. Continue the journey to Alcacer and spend three nights at the stylish Pousada Alcacer do Sal in the centre of this historic town. The pousada’s original castellated walls and towers remain while the interior has been modernised to compliment the traditional building.
Enjoy a full-day’s included tour of the UNESCO-listed city of Évora, the finest example of the golden age of Portugal since the earthquake destruction of Lisbon in 1755. This city dates to Roman times and in the 15th century it became the residence of the Portuguese kings. Whitewashed houses with wonderful examples of azulejos (colourful glazed tiles) and wrought-iron balconies will further enchant guests on this very special tour.
