Saga welcomes Milibands vow on pensioner benefits but warns on means testing winter fuel payment
'Our research amongst more than 10,000 over 50s shows that many, and particularly the over 65s, place a high value on universal benefits especially those that relate to their health - like prescriptions and eye tests.
‘Whilst means testing winter fuel payments is disappointing, particularly as the cost of the means test is huge compared to any potential saving, we are pleased they have no plans to extend means testing to other universal benefits.
‘Older people are making a huge contribution towards deficit reduction through losing their higher age-related tax free allowances and through the increase in the state pension age which has resulted in significant increases in their spending power and the taxes they pay and also reduces benefits they for those that would have claimed.’
