Saga takes island hopping to new level in Indian Ocean
Discover the beautiful islands of the Indian Ocean: Madagascar, Réunion and Mauritius on Saga’s 14-night Active Explorer tour which takes island hopping to a new level.
Madagascar, known as the Red Island because of its rust-coloured soil, is home to an incredible array of wildlife which has evolved from 80 million years of isolation in the Indian Ocean.
Saga guests travel in a small group of up to 17 and will visit the Ranomafana National Park where lemurs graze. There are 59 species of lemur in Madagascar and the park’s star attraction is the Sifaka – the golden lemur. These endangered animals with silky golden limbs and distinctive white-fringed faces are often found in the bamboo thickets.
Other species in this lush, hilly rainforest include the black and white ruffed lemur and the greater bamboo lemur as well as geckos and more than 100 species of frogs.
An all-day tour to Analamazaotra special reserve will offer guests another chance to see lemurs including the Indri indri, with their ring-tailed markings and soulful singing which can be heard through the rainforest.
The reserve is also home to wonderful flora and fauna including rare palms. Guests can return in the evening to watch for nocturnal residents such as mouse lemurs and pygmy chameleons.
The tour continues with a flight to the island of Réunion where guests will stay at the beachside resort LUX* Saint Gilles (4Q+) for three nights. There will be time to relax by the pool and on the palm-fringed white sand, visit the Cilaos Cirque, a naturally-occurring amphitheatre, 300m above sea level or discover the island’s wild southern coast and dramatic volcanic peaks (optional excursion).
On the final leg of this Indian Ocean odyssey guests will take a flight to Mauritius for a four-night stay at the all-inclusive Tamassa resort 4Q+ in Bel Ombre. There will be much to see including the Sacred Lake of Grand Bassin and ventures through the Black River Gorges National Park, plus a visit to the spectacular Chamarel Waterfalls and a rum distillery.
Optional excursions include a catamaran cruise, visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens at Pamplemousse, taking an underwater walk at the beautiful Trou aux Biches beach and touring Colonial Mauritius.
Guest can extend their holiday in Mauritius for five nights with a half-board option at the LUX* Belle Mare 5Q, set beside a turquoise lagoon.
