Secrets of the Maya
Journey from the heights of Mexico City to Guatemala's towering Sierra Madre, passing through the jungle, exploring colonial towns and ancient cities to discover the cultural legacy of the Maya.
After this unique adventure a change of pace comes with a seven-night beach holiday option to chill out on white sandy beaches.
Price includes VIP door-to-door chauffeur service and return flights.
Arrive in Mexico City and spend two nights at the Hampton Inn (3Q) to explore this ancient and high-altitude capital. Wander in the main square or take an optional tour to the bohemian Coyoacan, where artists Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera lived and worked.
Before leaving Mexico head out to see the Zócalo and the world-famous Anthropological Museum. Continue to the ceremonial centre of the ancient city of Teotihuacan, home to the mighty Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead.
Fly to Antigua, a UNESCO-listed city in Guatemala's central highlands and spend two nights in the charming Hotel El Meson de Maria (3Q+). This beautiful city, once part of Spain’s colonial empire, has churches and monasteries on every corner.
Travel to the Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican site of Iximiché, one-time capital of the Kaqchikel to see the pyramid temples before continuing on to Lake Atitlan, Central America's deepest lake - and prepare to be wowed by the views. Stay two nights at the Villa Santa Caterina (3Q) which sits on the shoreline.
Cross the border into Mexico and stay two nights at the lovely Villa Mercedes (3Q+) and visit Palenque – the 8th-century Mayan city that vanished into the jungle for more than 1,000 years.
Travel along the coast to the UNESCO-listed city of Campeche, founded by the Spanish in 1540 and developed as a trading port. Stay overnight at the beachside Tucan Siho (3Q+) and cool off with a swim in the sea or the hotel’s pool.
Continue to Uxmal, one of Mexico's most important late-Mayan sites which reveals the ancient civilisation’s understanding of astronomy. Stay two nights at the peaceful Hacienda Sotuta de Peon (4Q), in a village resort.
Stay and tour at a restored 19th-century agave estate, the Sotuta de Peon and visit Chichén Itzá, which highlights different styles of Mayan art and architecture including Kukulkan, a step pyramid that rises to almost 100 feet.
A tour of colonial Mérida ends this fascinating new tour but it does not have to end here - guests can choose a change of pace and opt for a seven-night extension at Dreams Puerto Adventuras (4Q) on the Riviera Maya to relax beside white sandy beaches and turquoise waters to savour learning the Secrets of the Maya.
