Saga hopes the Great British Bake off inspires people to share family recipes

Tuesday 23 August 2016

Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry springing back into action this week may inspire the next generation of bakers to put on an apron and dust off the mixers. However, Saga is encouraging the over 50s to pass on their favourite family recipes to the younger members of their family to keep traditions alive.

Saga hopes The Great British Bake off inspires people to share family recipes

According to research by Saga, six out of ten people are keen bakers knowing how to make more than a traditional Victoria sponge*. Furthermore, around one in five say their grandparents taught them how to rustle up sweet and savoury treats.

Saga communications director Paul Green, commented: “The Great British Bake Off never seems to fail to inspire people, young and old, to dust off their mixers and make some delicious treats for family and friends.

“We want to encourage all the Saga generations to pass on their favourite recipes to their nearest and dearest and keep family traditions going. The hit TV show springing back on to the TV screens may be a perfect time to do this especially as we know so many grandparents are looking after their grandchildren over the next couple of weeks. Perhaps families can have their own bake off and every member can create a signature bake.”

Saga has also sought to put an end to the age old debate of should it be jam or cream first on your afternoon scone.  In a survey of nearly 9,000 over 50s, 84% said it should be jam on first and then cream on top.  But there are differences when it comes to sex – with 19% of men saying it should be cream first and then jam compared with 12% of women.  As expected there were sharp regional differences with cream first achieving 26% in the South west – but only 9% in Yorkshire**.
