Can't wait for the new series of Channel 4's Indian Summers? - Take your own unforgettable journey of discovery through Northern India with Saga
With Channel 4’s Indian Summers due to hit our screens with a second series in early February, Saga customers can take their own adventure through Northern India on a 10 night “Himalayan Heritage Trail”. Experience the hustle and bustle of Amritsar, marvel at the beauty of Shimla - the setting for the series itself - and savour the electric atmosphere of the old bazaar in Delhi.
The tour begins in the bustling city of Amritsar, where guests spend two nights at the Hyatt Hotel (4Q). A sightseeing tour visits the incredible Sikh & Hindu temples throughout the city and includes a chance to witness the military spectacle of the changing of the guard ceremony at Wagah which has taken place every evening at sunset since 1959.
Next stop is an overnight stay in the French colonial inspired city of Chandigarh before the tour then heads North East to the town of Shimla, the former summer capital of the British in India and the setting for the captivating series.
Guests spend four nights at the Radisson Hotel Shimla (4Q) located at the foot of the northwest Himalayas with stunning views of the surrounding cedar forests. The town’s ties with the British Raj have left a legacy of splendid colonial edifices and quaint cottages.
The tour also includes a sightseeing visit of Shimla with an excursion to the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, the summer home of the British Viceroy in India and base from which the British Raj was ruled. The Partition Agreement, where India and Pakistan gained independence from Britain was also negotiated here, and visitors have included Gandhi and Nehru.
The highlight of the trip is an unforgettable journey aboard the Himalayan Queen Express along the Kalka-Shimla Railway, built to connect the summer capital of India in 1903 to the Indian Railway system. Experience some of the most incredible scenery the region has to offer and travel through the sweeping foothills of the Himalayas.
The final two nights are spent in the heart of New Delhi at the Suryaa, New Delhi (4Q). A tour explores the highlights of the old and the new and includes a visit to the Raj Ghat, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk and Delhi’s oldest monument Qutab Minar.
