NEW: Photography across the Andes
Join professional photographer Nigel Foster on 17-night adventure across Peru, Bolivia and Chile
Whether it is capturing passing scenery from a train or snapping pre-Inca monuments, professional photographer Nigel Foster will be on hand during Saga’s Photography across the Andes tour to give guests advice on how to capture the perfect picture.
Nigel, a member of the British Institute of Professional Photography, will give a series of talks including travel photography, architecture, landscapes and editing during this new 17-night adventure.
Guests can also join Nigel to take pictures of the night sky during free time in Lima, Cusco, La Paz and in Santiago head off the beaten track in search of unique photo opportunities.
This epic journey starts in Peru’s capital Lima and after exploring the city guests can join an evening introduction to photography with tips on keeping a photographic diary.
After a flight to Cusco, the journey continues on the expedition train to the Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu - an introduction to the ancient civilisations who inspired this new holiday; the Incas and pre-Incas including the Urus, the Aymaras and Tiwanaku or Mapuche.
Guests travel on to Puno, aboard a 1920s-style Andean Explorer train which descends into the Urubamba River Valley past pre-Incan remains and the Incan ruins of Raqchi into the high plateau of the Andes.
Bolivia is next on the itinerary and the tour takes in Copacabana before guests head to the Uro Irohito floating islands. Another cultural highlight is La Paz, at 3600 metres above sea level it is the highest capital in the world and almost entirely encircled by mountains. Here, Nigel is scheduled to give a refresher talk on landscape photography before guests fly to Uyuni to visit a cemetery for abandoned trains.
In Uyuni, accommodation is in a hotel built from salt from the Uyuni Salt Flat. When the salt is dry it forms a blinding white pattern of geometric shapes and when wet it becomes a mirror. A photographic challenge! A venture onto the flat and to Incawasi, an 'island' of fossilised coral and geriatric cacti completes the visit.
There is more of Bolivia's bizarre scenery to explore and photograph at the red lake of Laguna Colorada and the geothermal plain of Sol de Mañana.
Chile is the next destination where the tour reaches altitudes of around 4,000 metres. Guests can watch the sun rise at the El Tatio geyser field or take an optional tour to Puritama Hot Springs before flying to the capital Santiago. Here, the itinerary allows for leisure time or a city tour which includes the colonial main square, the Pre-Columbian Museum and San Cristóbal Hill.
To round-off this incredible holiday, guests travel into the foothills of the Andes to the Maipo Valley, characterised by miles of vineyards, for a tasting and tour at Santa Rita winery.
The holiday can be extended with a four-night post tour in Puerto Varas to reveal the beauty of the Chilean Lakes or a four-night pre-tour to discover the diverse wildlife in Tambopata National Reserve in the southern Peruvian Amazon.
