Holidaymakers do not have to choose between a city break and a river cruise with Saga – they can combine the two.

The new Kingdoms of Saxony river cruise along the Elbe, Havel and Vltava offers extensions in the cultural cities Berlin and Prague with two-night stays in centrally located 4Q-rated hotels.

The hotel extensions give passengers the opportunity to immerse themselves in ‘city break’ destinations as well as enjoying magnificent views of the Bohemian countryside and beautiful Saxony while sailing on board the 80-guest MV Katharina von Bora.

The river cruise will start in Potsdam, sailing to Magdeburg, home to a magnificent cathedral which can be seen long before the ship reaches the port. There will be time to explore the town and find the Magdeburg Rider, probably the oldest German equestrian statue, dating from 1240.

MV Katharina von Bora will continue along the River Elbe to Wittenburg, a fascinating city associated with the great Protestant reformer Martin Luther. Meissen will be the next port of call, a picturesque town surrounded by vineyards, and there will be a visit to the Meissenware porcelain factory.

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, was devastated by allied bombing in World War ll but it has been sympathetically restored. Guests will have plenty of time to view this beautiful city and take an optional trip to see the stunning Sandstone Mountains which tower above the River Elbe.

The next morning will be spent in the royal city of Litomerice, on the confluence of the Elbe and Ohře, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Czech Republic with colourful Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance buildings.

MV Katharina will sail on to Melnik for an overnight mooring where the Elbe meets the Vltava, just north of Prague. On arrival in Prague there will be a tour to see Wenceslas Square and a host of historic architecture in the city that was once the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.

To extend the holiday, guests can choose from two nights in Berlin at the 4Q Golden Tulip Hotel Hamburg (4Q) or two nights at the 4Q Corinthia Hotel Prague.
