2017 is set to be a year of adventure for the over 50s

  • One in ten over 50s have been white water rafting on holiday

  • One in five enjoy Canoeing or Kayaking during their travels

  • Over 50s take an average of four holidays or breaks in a year

2017 is going to be a year full of adventure and exploration for the over 50s with Camel Riding, Kayaking and snorkelling topping the list of activities they enjoy during their travels according to travel experts Saga.

Whilst many people choose to use their holidays to escape from the daily grind, the over 50s like to do a little more with their time away. Taking an average of four breaks each year, a third of over 50s (33%) said they had been camel or elephant riding while just over a quarter (27%) enjoy snorkelling and a one in five (21%) like to explore a little more on safari.

It doesn’t stop there for the Saga generations with almost one in five taking to the water to go canoeing and kayaking (18%) and more than one in ten flying high on a hot air balloon adventure (12%).

And if you thought high adrenaline was out of the window for older travellers you couldn’t be more wrong with one in ten saying they have been white water rafting whilst on holiday. A further one in ten (9%) said they’d like to try zip-lining and 7% want to try parascending over water.

Whilst over 50s take an average of four breaks each year, the poll of more than 9,000 over 50s revealed that four out of ten are planning to take five or more trips in the coming year.

As well as making the most of these trips, people like to take a variety of breaks throughout the year with two thirds saying they like to go on a relaxing weekend break either in the UK or Europe, almost half like to go exploring on a foreign city break and 36% like to recharge their batteries and be pampered on an all-inclusive holiday.

Kevin McMullan, Head of Saga Travel Insurance, commented: “It’s clear from our research that the over 50s have a passion for travel and adventure. Whilst many people like to relax, if you are tempted to try out some of the more adventurous activities whilst away it’s wise to check that your insurance will cover you whilst taking part.”
