This primary school in a poor district of Bamburi, Mombasa, caught the attention of British holidaymakers back in 1996.
On seeing the building that served as a school for 130 pupils they knew they had to do something to help and with support from friends in the UK set about funding and constructing a new school building.
Now registered as a charity in the UK, three dedicated couples raise the funds needed to run the school, which provides free education for over 300 children ranging in age from 3 to 15 years.
Under the leadership of head teacher, Joshua, the school is really thriving and his hard work and enthusiasm is proving to be a huge asset to the future progress of Mikoroshoni.
One of the ongoing challenges is to provide a feeding programme at the school, particularly as it is located in an area of real economic hardship and this meal may be the only one the children receive. To support this, the Trust is funding a breakfast meal of millet porridge for children at Mikoroshoni. This will not only provide nutrition, but help improve the students concentration and their capacity for learning.
