Coconut Oil mill reopens in Sri Lanka
It’s official – the Wellamadda Coconut Oil Extraction Mill, near Galle in Sri Lanka has reopened.
The mill was completely destroyed by the tsunami which devastated this part of Sri Lanka in 2004. In Wellamadda alone, 17 people were left dead and 32 families homeless. It has been a long haul to get this mill rebuilt and up and running again and we are delighted that it is now busy providing economic support for the people of Wellamadda. There are now five people working directly here and 30 who earn an income by selling copra, the raw product, to the mill. In addition we have made an agreement with the mill owner that 30% of profits will be going into a community Trust fund, thereby providing ongoing support to those affected by the tragedy.
