Tumaini Children’s Home

In Bamburi, North of Mombasa, the Tumaini Children’s home is providing care for children who are infected with or by HIV/Aids. The home was founded by British born Joan Smith, who retired to Mombasa and was moved by the plight of children abandoned or orphaned through the disease.

Joan set about engaging funding and local support and the Saga Charitable Trust helped to fund furnishings and other facilities. The home was eventually opened in spring 2006 and the happy, caring environment that has been created is a real testament to Joan and her team.

Tumaini has also received much-needed funds from customers and crew on the 2006 Saga Ruby World Cruise and is now well established with 21 children in residence.
