Saga Charitable Trust
Nokhanyo Educare Centre
In the township of Khayelitsha, near Cape Town, the Trust supports a small childcare centre called ‘Nokhanyo.’ We first made contact with the centre in 2003, where around 30 children were being looked after by a local woman in her small shack with very basic facilities. Thanks to funds raised on the 2004 Saga Rose World Cruise, a new building was erected and training for the Principal and staff provided.
Since then, the Trust has partnered with the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) to provide ongoing mentoring support and training for Nokhanyo and link them with the relevant government departments. The building has now been extended to create additional space and facilities and they are in the process of registering for government subsidies, which we hope will ensure a sustainable future.
