The Ekari Foundation
The Saga Charitable Trust is working with the Ekari Foundation in Malawi throughout 2016, funding a HIV Awareness Programme and providing libarary books for the shared schools service in Phalombe.
Malawi has the 9th highest in country prevalance of HIV/AIDS in the world with a high rate of early marriages - 50% of girls are married before the age of 18. Spreading awareness about these topics to primary school children is an important way of reducing the number of young people contracting HIV and the number of early teenage pregnancies. Our funding will provide awareness training for 16 primary schools during 2016.
The Library Programme run by the Ekari Foundation provides textbooks and study guides for students in the Phalombe district. Textbooks are very scarce in Malawi with a classroom of 50 students often sharing one or two textbooks between them. This programme allows students to borrow between three to five textbooks each term and this has helped to reduce the number of children repeating a school year by 50% since 2010. Our funding will provide 80 new textbooks increasing the number available for loan to each student to six.
