From Sharpe to stilettos: Accused star Sean Bean takes the grown-up test

By Paula Kerr , Wednesday 15 August 2012

He's best known as soldier Richard Sharpe and a Bond villain. So it's surprising, to say the least, to see 'ard man Sean Bean cast as a transvestite teacher with a blonde alter ego, Tracie, in BBC One's drama from Jimmy McGovern, Accused. Married four times, Sean, 53, is now single and lives in London. But how old is he in his head? Sean Bean takes the grown-up test

How do you keep fit?

As a kid, I boxed. Now I cycle.

Latest bit of new tech?

An iPad, but I need to get together with my kids, so they can show me how it works.

You're playing a blonde in BBC series Accused... do they have more fun?

Yes! It was one of the most enjoyable things I've done.

Worst thing about dressing as a woman?

It takes longer. I wore the heels around my house before filming. After a bit I was walking on cobbles - in stilettos - with ease.

What facts about you would surprise us?

I enjoy gardening. I don't just plant busy lizzies. I've done a lot of landscaping.

What did turning 50 mean to you?

Understanding I should keep fit and eat better. I gave up booze for Lent and felt great. Turning 50 wasn't a landmark but getting to 52 was a bit shocking. Life goes past quick, doesn't it?

What was your last good deed for the planet?

Donating one of my fees to renovate a recreation ground in Sheffield.

Do you play a musical instrument?

An upright piano. I'm not too bad, but I'm having lessons.

Who is your favourite James Bond?

Pierce Brosnan, with Sean Connery a close second.

What do you never travel without?

Henderson's Relish, a sauce from Sheffield. It's gorgeous on fish and chips.

When did you feel grown up?

At 16, as an apprentice welder. I thought, 'I'm hard'.

Preferred epitaph?

Let there be free beer for all.

What was your childhood career dream?

I wasn't good at anything much until I started acting. I packed in welding, got into RADA and didn't look back.

What are your most prized possessions?

Three swords: one each from Sharpe, Macbeth and Troy.

What irritates you?

Traffic wardens, petty rules...

Would you prefer your youth back or do you prefer life now?

My youth. The Seventies were glamorous, arty and exciting.

Live to work or work to live?

Always work to live.

Your greatest love?

My kids - and Sheffield United.

Verdict: Sean, it's hard to erase the memory of those tight breeches, playing Sharpe in your thirties. But despite your iPad fog, you've stayed fit enough for heels, so we put you at 43.

Big fan of Sean Bean! His portrayal of Tracey was fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed Accused! Still think he looks best as gorgeous Sharpe! Have enjoyed his huge variety of work including Macbeth on stage! Keep it coming Sean!

Sean Bean As Tracey & Simon in the 'Accused'. I was overwhelmed by the portrayal of both characters by Sean Bean. Spectacular move between the two roles. For me Sean's metamorphasis into Tracey reflected his mammoth acting abilities. Tracey was portrayed with sensitivity, understanding and a huge dose of reality. This role has confirmed Sean Bean's credibility as one of the most accomplished & powerful actors of his time. I was mesmerised and the 'Accused' was brilliant.
