Saga Volunteer Travel Projects
The following descriptions provide an insight into the wonderful and rewarding work in which Saga volunteers could be involved. All of our initial projects will be based in South Africa.
Community care support
In a region suffering from high levels of unemployment and lacking in resources, the Missionvale Care Centre operates a number of programmes to support and benefit the local community. Working at the care centre, you can help the local volunteers and workers in a range of health and welfare programmes including counselling and support groups, health visiting and self-help projects.

School support programme
Children and teachers alike face poverty, disease and social problems, resulting from past economic injustices. This project will help to develop a counselling programme and train local counsellors who can help these children and their teachers. Opportunities also exist for qualified teachers to work in schools assisting teachers and tutoring learners.

There are currently nearly 50 children, between the ages of a few months to 16 years, living in the Naxal Orphanage. About half are babies and toddlers left on the doorstep by parents or family, some are found wandering the streets and are brought in by police. Working at the orphanage, you can help in a range of health and welfare programs including counselling and nutrition projects.

School support programme - Nepal (Kathmandu)
Located in Boudha, about 6-7 kilometres from the centre of Kathmandu, is Samata School. It is free, and closes it doors to no one. It is entirely dependent on charitable donations and sponsorship. For many of the 3,500 children this is their only chance of any education. This project will help build the capacity of the teachers, and support the child health and welfare program.
