Personalise your private health insurance
Saga HealthPlans offer a number of options to help you improve your cover or reduce your premiums.
Improve your cover with:
- Extended Cancer Cover - Why not include our optional Extended Cancer Cover? For an additional premium, this can be added to Saga HealthPlan Super, Secure, Saver Plus and Saver, to provide even greater reassurance.
- Health Cash Benefits Cover - You can also choose our Health Cash Benefits Cover. This valuable option provides money back against the cost of your everyday healthcare expenses, such as dental appointments and prescription glasses.
- Cover for pre existing hypertension (high blood pressure) - For an additional premium, Saga may be able to provide you with cover if you suffer from hypertension. Please call 0800 015 0226 to get a quote with hypertension cover. Alternatively, you can read more about our hypertension cover.
Reduce your premium with:
By selecting this option you agree to ask for an open referral each time you need to make a claim.
This is where your GP states the specialist type but does not name a particular specialist. When you contact us we will find a specialist and hospital for you and can even book your appointments. Choosing this option can help to reduce your premium.
Choose this option and if the NHS waiting time is more than four weeks, we'll arrange for you to be seen immediately in a private hospital. However, if the specialist who would oversee your private treatment confirms that the NHS can provide the treatment you need locally within four weeks of the date you need it, you’ll be treated by the NHS.
There are also eight common conditions for which we'll provide immediate treatment, even if you choose the 4 week wait option. These are:
- Varicose veins surgery
- Removal of gall bladder
- Removal of bunions
- Correction of squint
- Insertion of grommets
Choosing this option can reduce your premium significantly, making your health insurance even more affordable.
As with other insurances, you can add an excess to your Saga HealthPlan to reduce your premium.
The excess is the amount you agree to pay each year before any benefit becomes payable. Saga HealthPlans offer a choice of £0, £100, £250, £500, £750 or £1,000 optional excesses.
When you take out a Saga HealthPlan you'll usually start with a 35% No Claim Discount, which rises annually by 5% to a maximum of 60% if you do not claim.
If anybody covered on the policy claims, you move back two levels on the scale, but you'll never fall below level 0, no matter how many claims you make.

Available for an additional premium, Saga’s No Claim Discount protection allows you to make one claim without it adversely affecting your No Claim Discount.
