These healthy apps for your smartphone could keep you in fine fettle.

According to research, approximately 14.5 million people (29% of the British population) made a resolution to lose weight in 2018. Of those, 19% also declared that they planned on improving their fitness levels too.

However, over half of us fail to stick with our resolutions for longer than a month. So, what can we do to ensure we stick to our guns and improve our health in 2019?

You don’t have to run marathons to enjoy running. In fact, the Couch to 5k app is highly recommended for over 50s who want to go for a jog. Presented by Public Health England, it builds you up gradually with a mix of running and walking, so that within nine weeks you should be able to run five kilometres (3.1 miles). There’s also a choice of five virtual trainers to help you on your fitness journey and keep you motivated.

Running in your 50s


You don’t have to enjoy the gym to stay fit. For some, you can be just as productive working out in the comfort of your home. If this sounds like you, then Sworkit could be the app for you. With their ‘no gym, no excuse’ slogan, it pretty much speaks for itself.

With a host of exercise ideas and programmes to choose from, including strength, cardio and stretching, you can mould your perfect workout. The app will deliver an array of exercises to follow during your session and is a great option for those who already have a good knowledge of where they want to target.

Walking is a great form of exercise. It’s recommended for older people to go for brisk walks, even if it’s just to the shops. Walking is a great way to strengthen your bones and, according to the National Osteoporosis Society, 50% of women over 50 and one in five men aged over 50 will suffer from a broken bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. This app offers a wide range of walking paths within the UK and enables you to download them to your device. You can also share you walks with others and follow your progress with live satellite GPS.
