Holidays to Dubai

Sky-high glamour, sparkling shores

The jewel in the crown of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is a city that well and truly likes to show off. Here, you’ll find the world’s largest shopping centre, biggest fountain, and tallest building – the majestic Burj Khalifa.

A true Middle Eastern playground, this forever-evolving city packs in glittering skyrises, superyachts, pristine beaches, and a host of fashionable bars and restaurants.

In terms of where to stay, the upscale Jumeirah neighbourhood unravels for miles along the beachfront. Jutting off from here is the famous Palm Jumeirah, a series of man-made isles that brag some of the most luxurious hotels in the world. If you’d rather be in the heart of the city action, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina are good choices. Alternatively, consider Old Town Dubai for traditional hotels with sun-soaked courtyards and waterway views.

It’s the tallest building in the world, so the views from the Burj Khalifa were always going to be outstanding. Gaze over city skyscrapers, desert dunes and man-made islands from the 125th floor observation lounge – visit after dark to see the city lights in all their splendour.

Get a little taste of ‘real’ Dubai at the redeveloped Dubai Creek, clustered around the area where the city’s first settlement was made. Get happily lost shopping for spices and textiles in the souks, then take to the water on a traditional abra boat.

The dunes of the Arabian desert lie just outside the city, so it’s easy to escape for a day. Join a desert safari, ride a camel or tuck into a traditional meal as the sun sets over the sands.

Dubai is dry and sunny year-round, so the best time to visit depends on how hot you like things. Average temperatures in summer are usually in the mid-30s, with highs topping 40°C. In the winter, expect highs in the early to mid-20s.

Arabic is the official language in Dubai, though English is widely spoken.

Dubai is four hours ahead of GMT.

Flight time from the UK to Dubai is around seven hours.

Currently, if you’re a British Citizen, you’ll be issued a tourist visa on arrival in Dubai, which will be valid for 30 days. Visit GOV UK or CIBT visas for more advice on passports and visas.
