Saga Group just keeps doing, with £36,797.34 raised for charity partner The Silver Line

Saga’s FUNdraising fortnight saw the Saga Group raise £36,797.34 for The Silver Line, across the organisation. 

The Silver Line is The Saga Group’s nominated charity, which operates a confidential and free helpline for older people to combat loneliness.

 

Founded by TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen after she suffered intense loneliness following the death of her husband, the charity offers a friendship service for people aged 55 and over. The Silver Line has recently just answered their one millionth call since 2013, supported by some 3,000 volunteers.

 

Saga fundraisers took the opportunity to support the charity through “Saga’s FUNdraising fortnight”, the first week of which was The Silver Line’s ‘Silver Week’, which saw Over 600 employees at Saga take part in the two-week fun fund-raising event.

 

All Saga employees were invited to take part and get involved. Saga teams had the pleasure of soaking their managers with a bucket of water… or two! Some employees donated money to dress down for the fortnight, whilst others volunteered to roll up their sleeves in the charity car wash.

 

2500 raffle tickets were purchased throughout the business, 1285 chocolate mice were sold and 36 prizes were auctioned to raise funds for Saga’s charity partner.

 

The funds raised throughout the two-week event included: an online auction £4,237.00, onsite fundraising £14,840.34, company golf day £750 as well as Saga matched funding £15,000 and customer/supplier donations £1,970.

 

The funds raised within the organisation predominantly support the phone lines that are manned by volunteers 365 days a year, helping to fund outbound calls. Saga has also helped to fund advertising and direct mail campaigns to promote the helpline and encourage more volunteers to join the charity.

About The Silver LIne

The Silver Line charity provides support to older people and is the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Since their national launch, The Silver Line Helpline has received over 1.4 million calls. Over two-thirds of these calls were made overnight or at weekends when no other helpline is available for older people who may be lonely, isolated or confused.

The charity now receives around 10,000 calls every week from lonely and isolated older people; with 53% of callers saying they have literally no-one else to speak to.

Over 3,000 volunteer Silver Line Friends are now making regular weekly friendship calls to older people. 

The charity relies entirely on voluntary donations to cover the cost of calls to the helpline and The Silver Line’s friendship services. £5 will pay for a call to an older person who may not have spoken to another human being all week, £50 will pay to recruit and train a volunteer, £100 will pay for one person to be befriended for a year and £250 will pay for someone to be supported by the helpline and their own Silver Line friend for a year.
