Over 50s dramatically increase use of complementary and alternative therapies

  • 58% increase in claims for Chiropractic treatment in the last year
  • 65% increase in homeopathy treatment claims

Statistics from Saga Healthcare show that there has been a large increase in the number of over 50s opting for alternative therapy. The last year has seen a 58% increase in the number of claims for chiropractic treatment, a 65% increase in those visiting a homeopathist and 43% more claims for acupuncture treatment from Saga Cash Plan customers.

These findings are supported by figures from the Foundation for Integrated Health, who estimate that one in ten adults has had treatment from a complementary practitioner in the last year and that 90% of patients seek treatment outside the NHS.*

Physiotherapy and osteopathy treatments have also grown in popularity with people aged 50 and over, claims for these therapies have increased by 37% and 25% respectively.

Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga, commented: "The value of complementary therapy is clearly becoming more widely appreciated. People should be sure to choose registered practitioners by checking with the appropriate regulatory bodies."

Super Cover under Saga Private Medical Insurance offers £1,200 of cover for complementary therapies including chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy and acupuncture.

Saga's Health Cash Plan provides cover for up to 300 of physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatment each year.
