Planning to take your pet abroad this summer?
- It can take up to six months to get a pet passport
- Eight out of ten pet owners do not know how to obtain a pet passport
Since the Government began its pet passport scheme over 140,000 pets have been overseas with a pet passport, which avoids the need for a stay in quarantine. Despite the growing popularity of taking 'man's best friend' with you, research by Saga Pet Insurance reveals that eight out of ten pet owners do not know how to obtain a pet passport.*
Pet owners considering taking their pet abroad this summer should start the process of obtaining a pet passport now as the application process can take over six months. People can learn more about how to obtain a passport by visiting their vet who should be able to talk them through the process of micro-chipping, rabies vaccinations, blood tests and other treatments that need to be carried out before return to the UK.
Michael Cutbill, Marketing Director, Saga said: "Pet passports are a great system for taking your pet abroad, but you do need to plan ahead."
Saga offers a travel policy as an add-on to a pet insurance policy for 10 extra per year, per pet. This gives pets Saga's Super level of cover while abroad, for an unlimited number of trips and duration. Cover is also offered for quarantine costs if, for example, a pet's microchip fails. Saga also offers cover for repeat tick and worming treatment if, for example, costs are incurred as a result of departure for the United Kingdom being delayed by a transport company.
Super Cover with Saga Pet Insurance includes cover for veterinary fees, advertising and reward costs, holiday cancellation cover, accidental damage and 3rd party liability costs.
