Saga Home Insurance take a stand at BBC Gardeners' World Live

Saga Home Insurance take a stand at BCC Gardeners' World Live - NEC Birmingham 15th - 19th June

  • Free prize draw for a RHS garden holiday worth 2,000 at the Saga stand
  • Saga Home Insurance offers advice to keep your garden safe from crime

As many garden enthusiasts plan to visit BBC Gardeners' World Live at the Birmingham NEC this month (15th - 19th June), Saga Home Insurance reminds people to keep their own gardens safe. Thousands of British gardens are targeted by thieves every week, hardly surprising when we spend a staggering 4.45bn* a year on our gardens.

Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive, Saga, comments: "There are simple things you can do to protect your home and garden from the opportunistic thief."

Make your garden shed as secure as possible, put up metal grills over any windows, and hang curtains inside to stop anyone looking in. Valuable items such as power tools could be secured to a fixed point in the shed with a bicycle lock or padlock.

Defensive planting can be a simple, colourful and effective idea; a traditional hedge can be one of the best deterrents, especially a spiky hedge such as a hawthorn.

Consider installing outside security lighting to illuminate dark corners.

Lock away tools and ladders that might be useful to burglars wanting to break into your home.

Keep your boundary fences and walls regularly maintained to make sure it's not easy to just slip into your back garden.

Saga Home Insurance is also sponsoring the National Gardens Scheme 2005 which opens up privately owned gardens to the public. For a copy of Saga's regional NGS guides which list the gardens and when they are open to the public simply visit

Saga Home Insurance is available to people aged 50 and over.
