General Election - the Saga Poll

Never have the votes of people over 50 been more important to the result of the General Election. With less than a third of young people expected to turn out and vote in the forthcoming election, it's the Saga generation that will decide who wins. Conducted by ICM for Saga Magazine, the research reveals just how vital older voters will be to the future direction of the country:

Key findings:

Generational turnout could swing result

Twice as many over 65s plan to vote than younger age groups

More younger voters plan to stay away from polling stations than election day 2001

Voters increasingly fed up with all political parties

No room for complacency for Blair

Tax, NHS, crime, education and pensions system key to older vote

The poll breaks new ground by analysing the difference in voting intentions between the baby boomer generation and the over 65s who lived through the war and reveals significant differences between the two.

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,442 adults aged 18 by telephone between 11th and 17th February. This included an extra 430 interviews with those aged 50 . Interviews were conducted across the country and the results weighted to the profile of all adults.
