Culture vultures not vinda-loonigans - the new Brits abroad
"Vindaloo, Vindaloo la la" is not just a football chant, but a true reflection of travelling Brits' changing attitudes towards food and culture. According to new insight from Saga Travel Insurance, the majority of Brits attempt to experience foreign cultures and learn new languages when overseas, however stick to British food except in countries they are familiar with through take aways at home.
The image of Brits 'on tour' has finally been relegated as 87% of tourists proudly attempt to experience local culture whilst abroad and 67% try to learn the basics of new languages. 55 to 64 year olds are the most likely to always make the effort. Egg and chips, mushy peas and fry ups are no longer likely to entice British holiday makers as only 9% prefer British menus over local dishes and one in three even bring back to the UK food that they can't get at home.
One explanation for this new phenomenon could be the 'globalisation' of our taste buds through take away meals in the UK. Interestingly 50% of Brits going to France confess to taking some of their own food whereas only 21% take their own food to Thailand. Familiar with pizza and pasta only 34% of us take our own provisions to Italy and the promise of burgers means just 28% take their own food to the USA.
Overall 31% of Brits do still admit to taking some of their own food abroad and teabags tops the list (74%). Sweets (71%), Biscuits (57%), UK chocolate (47%) and crisps (41%) are also favourites to stash in the suitcase
