Government follows Saga's systems to aid patient choice

Commenting on the Government's announcement that a website is to be set up this year to give patients more choice over the hospitals they use for surgery, Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive, Saga Group said:

"We fully support the Government in its mission to offer the appropriate information to allow patients to make informed choices about their treatment. Saga has been at the forefront of doing this for a significant amount of time already through our online tool - Saga Health Manager, this FREE service helps patients and their GPs to find the best possible hospital care, by comparing services and standards in the NHS and private hospitals through the UK. The site also allows people to search for a consultant specialising in their needs. Saga's Health Manager can be found at

"Patient choice is now key. The 2005 British Social Attitudes survey, confirmed that 65% of people want to be able to choose their treatment, 63% their hospital and 53% the date and time of their appointment. At a time when there are more options than ever before about where and when people receive treatment, both from the private sector and the NHS, having access to a source of information that you can trust is increasingly important."
