Destination with a difference - Mongolia makes its Saga debut

  • Visit the Gobi glaciers, desert and grasslands in Ghengis Khan country

Wild horses, felt tents, archery and dinosaur eggs don't usually feature in holiday itineraries - but then Saga's 2007 Travellers World brochure doesn't do "usual" holidays.

A host of new longhaul offerings, covering everywhere from Patagonia to Madagascar and from Tennessee to Rotorua, are featured in this year's programme but for a holiday with a real difference, pick of the Saga debutantes just has to be Mongolia, a land of true contrasts.

Saga's 'The Land of Ghengis Khan' tour gives visitors a chance to get under the skin of the country, with opportunities to learn about Mongolian Buddhism, stay in traditional accommodation, meet the nomadic people and experience the amazing scenery including the Gobi Desert, expansive plains and even a glacier.

Holidaymakers fly first to Beijing for an overnight stay, and then on to Ulan Bator, Mongolia's capital. A two-night stay includes trips to local natural history museums, monuments and monasteries, a visit to the former royal palace, and an introduction to traditional Mongolian cuisine!

Then it's on to the Hustain Nuruu National Park in search of those wild horses, and a spot of camel-riding, followed by a traditional Mongolian barbecue and an overnight in a traditional ger, a circular felt-roofed tent.

Further highlights include the Buddhist shrines of Kharkhorin, the petrified forests and six-mile-wide glacier in the Yol National Park, fossil-hunting and archery at Bayan Zag (where scores of dinosaur eggs have been unearthed) and a visit to a cashmere factory - the soft goat's-wool is one of Mongolia's principal exports.

The escorted, 12-night* Land of Genghis Khan tour costs from 2,419 per person, including flights, accommodation, transportation and all meals. Departures are on May 13 and 27, June 10, July 22, August 12 and September 2.

Clients can extend their holidays with three nights in Beijing (from 199) or a three-night trip to Xi'an to see the terracotta warriors (from 269).
