On May 14, 1607, a group of Powhatan Indians watched in amazement as 100-plus English pioneers disembarked from the Susan Constant, the Discovery and the Godspeed and set about establishing America's first-ever permanent European settlement.
On May 8, 2007 - 400 years later - Saga is offering its holidaymakers the chance to follow in the footsteps of those early adventurers and celebrate the 400th anniversary of the English colonists.
New this year to the company's Travellers World brochure is a 12-night* 'Rediscovering the Old South' tour covering Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Virginia - including Jamestown and Williamsburg, sites of the earliest settlements. *includes one night aboard aircraft.
The escorted tour starts with flights from Gatwick to Raleigh-Durham, and continues with visits to Winston Salem; one of the US' most historic towns, Gatlinburg; which includes an excursion to the Smoky Mountains national park and an optional tour of Dollywood, Dolly Parton's legendary theme park, South Carolina's state capital Columbia; and Savannah, Georgia where there is the chance to explore the city's elegant colonial mansions. The itinerary then takes in Charleston and Wilmington before culminating in Williamsburg for an anniversary exploration of Virginia's historic triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.
Saga's 'Rediscovering the Old South' tour costs from 1,519 per person, departing on May 8. Additional departures are available on May 15, June 5, September 4 and 18, October 2 and November 6.
