Silver Surfers turn to peers for medical and health advice
Silver surfers are increasingly turning to their peers in online chat rooms for the latest health advice according to increasing numbers logging onto Saga Zone, the social networking element of over-50s experts Saga*. The site is providing a unique opportunity for the tech-savvy generation to discuss shared ailments and remedies in the face of a recent YouGov poll proving that trust in family doctors is waning.**
Saga Zone reports that the 'Health related threads and forums' are one of the most popular topics on the site which receives thousands of visits per day, and these statistics echo a recent report that predicts those aged 55 are set to become the largest demographic group online***.
Recent topics discussed range from specific treatments for arthritic pain relief and psoriasis, to those seeking general advice on coping with hip or knee replacements and how to give up smoking. Alternative remedies such as Chinese acupuncture and Reiki have also been discussed.
The average age of a Saga Zone health user is 62 with three times as many women as men posting advice and requests.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive Saga Group Ltd, comments "We would always recommend that people seek appropriate medical advice, however social networking sites provide a unique platform for the over-50s to offer reassurance and support within their peer group. It is great to see so many people in this age group embracing such a positive use of new technology."
