A third of UK holiday makers want a luxury spa as part of ultimate holiday

  • For two thirds, luxury means 5 star accommodation
  • Nearly half say that luxury means some peace and quiet

With work-related stress accounting for over a third of all new incidences of ill health*, it is no wonder that new research** has revealed that for half of people a luxury break simply means enjoying some hard earned piece and quiet.

The research commissioned by Ultimate Retreats also found that for two thirds of those contemplating a luxury holiday, 5-star accommodation is a luxurious must have, whereas over half say that good food and wine are the hallmarks of a luxury holiday.

Whilst a third overall felt a luxury spa was an important consideration for a luxury holiday it seems regionally, we differ widely in our opinions. Londoners prefer being pampered more than most, an enormous 48% said a spa was important to them and 42% of Geordies agreed. Whereas only 25% of the Welsh, 26% of those from the East Midlands and 28% of those from the West Midlands felt that spas were so important.

Clearly, with age comes refinement, as the survey also revealed some differences between generations; whilst almost half of 25-34 year olds think pina coladas on the beach are a must have on a luxury holiday, just one in five over 50s agree. Instead, 55 per cent say they prefer to indulge in some "peace and quiet".

But it seems that when it comes to all things gourmet, people of every age are in agreement, with an average of over half (55%) of respondents suggesting that a good supply of fine wine and food were essentials for a luxurious break.

Ian Coghlan, Managing Director, Ultimate Retreats, commented: "What defines a 'luxury holiday' is such a personal choice, but it's interesting to see how much people's perceptions of 'luxury' vary. Excellent accommodation and service is a natural choice for holidaymakers, but with over half the population wanting fine wines and good food, it shows that, as a nation, we are becoming more cultured and sophisticated in our luxury choices."

In light of our love affair with all things 'luxurious', Ultimate Retreats has added several new luxury holiday destinations to their 2008 Ultimate Retreats brochure:
