Saga reveals results of record-breaking fund-raising walk
In May 2008 over 7,000 customers and staff of Saga Holidays, the leading travel company for the over 50s, walked the equivalent distance from Kent to Kathmandu, in a fund-raising event supporting the Saga Charitable Trust.
Figures have been announced and staff and customers raised over £18,000. The Saga Group has doubled this total, which means the final amount raised exceeded £37,000.
All customers on a Saga holiday during the week long fund-raising event were invited to "Walk a Mile to Raise a Smile". Whether trekking in Nepal and jungle-exploring in Borneo, adventures in Canada and Costa Rica or on the Saga ships, Rose and Ruby, many took part in what was a record-breaking event for the company.
All funds went to the Saga Charitable Trust, which was set up to benefit underprivileged communities at destinations in developing countries that host Saga holidaymakers. This money will specifically be used on projects including St Lucia, South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka where the company has some of its volunteer tourism projects.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga Group commented, "This was a great event and fun to be a part of. We are delighted with the response from our customers and staff and thank them all for their enthusiasm and support of the Saga Charitable Trust."
The Saga Charitable Trust's policy is to invest in sustainable projects to empower and support local communities as well as offer increased opportunities for them to benefit from tourism. The Saga Group covers all the UK overheads and administrative costs. Every penny donated by customers and staff goes to help the projects.
