Emma Soames, Editor at large of Saga Magazine and Trustee of the Saga Respite for Carers Trust comments on the Shadow Cabinet minister, David Willetts, announcement to award sweeping new legal rights
“David Willetts announcement to award greater rights to grandparents will be warmly welcomed by today’s over 50s, many of whom have seen their families torn apart as a result of separation or divorce. When the going is good many grandparents are relied upon to provide critical support in the form of free childcare with almost one in five spending the equivalent of a week’s full time employment per month caring for their grandchildren. However when a relationship breaks down they are often the first to have this valuable time withdrawn with both the grandparent and the grandchild often used as a pawn in an often, bitter game.
The Tories new proposals not only give grandparents increased custodial rights but also make it easier for grandparents to qualify for childcare tax credits for the free childcare they provide. With recent research from Saga revealing a significant shift in support to the Tories, with more than two-thirds saying they are becoming pre-disposed towards them, David Willets move to put the needs of over 50s and grandparents high on their agenda is likely to be a very positive move."
