SHOCKING FIGURES SHOW 9 OLDER PEOPLE DIED EVERY HOUR LAST WINTER
As fuel bills soar and winter fuel payments are cut this year, Saga calls for support to ‘Surviving Winter Campaign’
The latest figures from the ONS revealing that there were 25,700 excess deaths in England and Wales last Winter are truly shocking.
Dr Ros Altmann, Director General of Saga said:
“To think that during last winter, more than nine older people died in this country every hour proves just how important it is to do more to help older people cope with the cold this year.
“With the governments winter fuel payments being cut and heating bills soaring, these ONS numbers are an indictment of our care for older citizens and prove yet again, the urgent need to act now to save lives.”
Saga would like to encourage anyone who can afford to, to support The Surviving Winter Campaign, run by the Community Foundation Network. This is a nationwide appeal which saved lives last year as a result of pensioners who were willing to donate their winter fuel payments to this worthy cause. This year, the need is even greater and the charity is ready to help vulnerable people across the country who are unable to heat their homes properly and to help them survive the cold.
