MORTALITY RATES FALL: GOOD NEWS FOR US, BAD NEWS FOR CARE CRISISFriday 20 January 2012
Commenting on a report from the Office of National Statistics that mortality rates are falling in the UK, Dr Ros Altmann, Director-General of over-50s group Saga, said:
MORTALITY RATES FALL: GOOD NEWS FOR US, BAD NEWS FOR CARE CRISIS
“The lowest death rate for decades is fantastic news on one front, but should be causing great concern in some corners of Westminster: the corners where Ministers are continuing to hide from acknowledgment that the more older people there are, the bigger the impending care crisis will be.
“While it is very sweet icing for many older people who will enjoy good health throughout later life, there has to be concern that it could be a very bitter cake given the improvement in old-age physical health and longevity, particularly amongst men, is exponential rather than steady in its improvement – meaning that a solution to the care issue is likely to start getting away from us unless we act soon.”
